Replace Air Filters Every 45-90 DaysApril 06, 2021
Replacing air filters is easy and should be done at least every 90 days, although many advise doing this once every month and a half, or around 45 days. Air filters help catch particles so they don't make their way through the HVAC system. Your efficiency and air quality relies on these filters being relatively clean and able to stop substances from blowing through, while also allowing air to pass freely. Due to the buildup of dust and other materials in the ducts, the filters must be replaced every now and then. You should aim to replace all filters every 90 days, or around 3 months. You will experience better results if you do it quicker, every 45 days or so.
You may need to replace air filters more frequently if you have pets in the house. The dander (skin particles similar to a human's dandruff) and fur can build up quickly and cause filters to become completely covered. Similarly, people who smoke in their house may find that their filters get coated in disgusting tar and need to be replaced often. This can affect the smell of the air, so replacing the filters can go a long way. There are many reasons that allergens or other contaminants can build up quickly in the ducts and on the filters. Consider professional filter replacement if you are not sure how to do it or have never done it in your house prior.
Larger homes may need filter replacements more often while smaller homes benefit from less overall air being pushed around, so less debris being caught by the filters. This is to be expected, but that's not to say that small homes should ignore the filters. Just like air ducts should be cleaned, you should make sure filter replacements are done routinely too.
